Setting it Straight.

Taken from: http://www.ironlak.com/learnmore/
(There have been far too many rumours regarding Ironlak of late)

Some facts about Ironlak:
Project Alchemy (cans marked with a green sticker) was conceived as a way of involving everyone in the creation and development of our new formula. The Project Alchemy formula we created was fine during our initial testing so this formula was confidently released into the market for user feedback.
As everyone is now aware, there have been some issues with this formula. Had we realised the extent of these, it would have never been released to the public.
We are aware of the impact this has had on many of you and we are sincerely apologetic.

Allow us to explain why attempting to create a new formula was necessary:
Over the past four years our paint has been made in Australia and although many of you were happy with the level we had taken it to, many still weren’t satisfied with some of the product’s flaws. This was apparent due to the constant flow of emails regarding blocked caps and fading paint. This drove us to try and create a new and improved formula that would push our product to new levels and make everyone happy.

The main issues we needed to address were the blocking of nozzles, UV resistance, the ‘glugginess’ (or coagulation), and the overall vibrancy of our paints. After much research in Australia we realised these issues couldn’t be corrected here without increasing the cost of the can by a hell of a lot. Being that one of our goals is to provide quality at a cheap price, this potential price increase is something that we were not prepared to do.
After much consideration and some hesitation we realised that moving offshore was our best option. In Asia we have access to the highest grade pigments in the world, allowing us to offer much brighter, more vibrant colours and a much higher UV resistant (much less likely to fade) formula. It also offers us control over the manufacturing process, something we previously did not have using an outside supplier.

By completely redesigning our formula we can also offer a much smoother finish, (there’s none of that gluggy build up that old Ironlak had) while maintaining and even increasing the coverage of our sprays. You know things are looking up when Eureka covers as well as Smurf.

Admittedly our first attempt (Project Alchemy) has been a failure in some areas, however we are proud to say we have got it almost perfect with the Rhodium formula; which is only our second attempt at making the stuff ourselves. Again we apologise for the inconsistent quality we have delivered at times over the years, you know that we always get it right in the end.
Please try a can of Rhodium (marked with a grey sticker) and let us know your thoughts.
We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Wiispray prototype graffiti controller for Wii

Friday, Jun 6th 2008 by Chris Davies.
(Taken from http://www.slashgear.com/wiispray-prototype-graffiti-controller-for-wii-0611925.php#entrycontent).

Nintendo’s non-traditional interface for the Wii console lends itself to any number of odd controller hacks and designs, and the latest is this prototype Wiispray can. Part of Martin Lihs’ final thesis at Bauhaus-University in Weimar, Germany, the can-style casing contains a dismembered Wiimote coupled to a nozzle button. It can be used to manipulate an on-screen virtual spraycan, with different paints and color options that are controlled by realistic graffiti movements.

Although still early in the development process, it suggests another type of game platform and a fresh twist on the tired “art” app. The success of custom controllers for specific titles suggests that gamers are interested in a more realistic interaction than permitted by a standard joypad. Lihs plans to integrate a communal wall for collaborative graffiti in the eventual software title, that would allow ‘players’ to work on the same art project.

Rather than a specially designed can, though, it would seem easier to make a Wiispray ‘caddy’ into which the Wiimote could slot. Some clever thinking could link the nozzle button to one of the Wiimote’s controls via mechanical rather than electrical means; price would also be reduced.

Ironlak 'Project Alchemy' Press Release...

Ironlak have relaunched their website today, and along with some burner new work by their family of writers, they also had a few words to say about their recent 'Project Alchemy' release, which hasnt had the best response to date...
Here is the press release posted on their blog about the issue...

We have recently experienced some problems with the latest release of Ironlak. We want to apologise for this inconvenience and thank all of our loyal customers for their continued support of Ironlak.

These issues have come about as a result of Ironlak taking a more proactive role in the production process and thereby giving us greater control long-term over increasing costs, product development and innovation.

While we recognise we have made some mistakes with this first release, we firmly believe that this was the right path to take to offer Australian writers the best quality and value for money product available. We will ensure things are back on track as quickly as possible.

Our previous supplier is now working with another paint brand in an effort to put us out of business. We are committed to giving Australian writers quality and value for money and while we have fallen short of late in this regard we also firmly believe the move to establish ourselves as a fully-fledged manufacturer will be in the long term benefit of our customers.

While it may be hard to see at present, the move towards becoming a manufacturer in our own right allows us greater control over the destiny of Ironlak and ultimately what we deliver to Australian writers.

We believe in being open and honest with our customers, as you guys have supported and sustained us through plenty of hard times and it's why we try so hard to deliver quality products and plenty of local support.

Thanks again for your understanding and support.

- The Ironlak Family.

Taggers forced to wear pink vests

Taken from http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23802107-38196,00.html
Wellington, NZ: A POLICE officer in New Zealand says he has cut graffiti crime by making taggers wear pink vests while painting over their tags.
Wellington community Constable Theo Gommans said the vests, emblazoned with the word 'tagger', made offenders make them think about the consequences of their actions, Radio New Zealand reported.
He said he had already seen a reduction in tagging since he began touring schools with the pink vest.
But local city councillor Iona Pannett likened the vests to the pink triangles that gay men were forced to wear in Nazi concentration camps and called for their use to be halted.

Spray day ties down tag dag

Taken from http://www.ntnews.com.au/article/2008/03/13/3590_ntnews.html
A GRAFFITI artist alleged to be one of Darwin's worst vandals was caught after having his shoelaces tied together in a bizarre citizen's arrest.
He also became the first Territorian linked to other spray-paint attacks by a police graffiti database.
Squash Association manager Scott Chamings surprised the 19-year-old vandal crouching behind a car after he had written "BELLY'' in 2m-high letters across the Millner squash centre's wall.
He saw the teenager packing away his spray cans, shouted at him and gave chase.
The would-be street "artist'' jumped a high fence wire -- not realising there was wire on the other side.
Mr Chamings, 45, said the vandal thrashed around, "like a young lion going
berserk in a cage'', until two squash players pinned him to the ground.
"One of the members used an old Second World War tactic on him -- he tied his shoe laces together until police arrived.'' Mr Chamings said it was "lucky'' the vandal had tried the stunt on a Thursday morning, as opposed to a Tuesday or Wednesday night, when the centre was "packed'' with members.
"They would have all been after him,'' he said.
Police arrested the man and, using the graffiti database, linked him to 14 other "tags'' around Darwin.
Superintendent Peter Gordon said the result showed the value of the database, which collected and collated graffiti reports and photos for police.
Superintendent Jo Foley said there were about 15 significant graffiti vandals leaving their tags around Darwin, including "Pain'', "Kezo'' and "Datz''.
The man has been charged with 15 counts of criminal damage.

Los Angeles: Tony Silver, award-winning documentary filmmaker, died of cancer at his home in Los Angeles on February 1, 2008. He was 72. He grew up in and around New York City and was a Ford Foundation scholar at Columbia University.
Mr. Silver was best known as the director and co-producer of Style Wars. The film chronicled the young artists of the graffiti subculture and the early stages of the New York City Hip Hop scene in the early 1980s. Mr. Silver recognized and captured on film the excitement of a new era of urban art and life. The film, a PBS special which won the Grand Prize for Documentaries at Sundance in 1984, celebrated its 20th anniversary re-release to continued acclaim at the Tribeca and Edinburgh Film Festivals. It continues to resonate throughout the worldwide rap and hip hop community as the most important film to capture the original spirit and vitality as it emerged from New York’s subways, streets and playgrounds into world consciousness.

RIP Flaps and Banish...

(Taken from news.com.au)
Sydney: A MAN has survived being swept a kilometre down a flooded stormwater drain but his two companions drowned when they were trapped behind bars at the drain’s outlet to the sea. Police say it was a miracle anyone survived the freak accident yesterday at Sydney’s eastern beaches. The two men and a woman got into the drain through a manhole at Maroubra yesterday afternoon to spraypaint graffiiti on the walls, police said. They became trapped when it began raining and the drain filled with water. All three were swept a kilometre down the drain and ended up at the barred outlet to the sea. A 25-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman drowned but a 27-year-old man survived by squeezing through a tiny gap in the bars and being swept out to sea.
Locals saw the man waving from the ocean and went out on surfboards to rescue him. Police Inspector Eddie Bosch called the man’s survival a miracle.
“It was amazing that anyone survived. He (the survivor) had hardly a scratch on him.” A helicopter rescue crewman and two local lifesavers pulled the bodies of the man’s companions from the drain. The crew chief of the Westpac rescue helicopter said the men were incredibly brave in retrieving the bodies. Lifesavers Paul Moffatt and Peter Halcro, and volunteer rescue crewman Brett Christensen, went into the flooded drain several times. It was over and above the call of duty,” said crew chief Tony Wood. “They were very brave and I’ve seen a lot of bravery in my time.”
He said the men faced a deluge coming from the drain and 2m waves behind them, and became pinned against the bars at one point.
The outlet was about 2m by 2m, with the bars only 10cm apart. Mr Halcro and Mr Moffatt said conditions inside the drain made the recovery incredibly difficult.” Inside the drain it was going dark with the surf pounding up through the drain ... while these bodies were just floating around and there was also stormwater coming out the other way,” Mr Halcro said. “We were dealing with dirty water and large surf.” Mr Moffatt, who worked with Mr Halcro to work the bodies out through the bars, towed the body of the woman out to sea so the rescue helicopter could winch it to a nearby rock ledge. He said it was one of the trickiest operations he had ever done. Steve Simmons, who helped rescue the survivor, said his teenage son had seen him while looking out of the window of their home. They grabbed their surfboards and paddled out to the man, and strapped him to a board with a leg-rope. When he got to shore, the man ran straight back to the drain.
“He got out of the water, he just panicked,” Mr Simmons said on Channel 9. “He ran straight round to the drain on the other side and he realised his two friends were dead. “He was just distraught on the rock ledge next to the situation where they were and we just had to drag him
up back away from it.”
Our thoughts and sympathies at Illegal Fame are with the families of ‘Flaps’ and ‘Banish.’ A page with some dedication work can be found in the back of issue 6.
May they rest in peace.

Writer seriously injured in fall

Melbourne: A teenage boy suffered a broken jaw, smashed teeth and fractures to his legs and wrists when he fell through a fibre glass roof while out graffitiing property in Melbourne.
Police said the 14-year-old was seriously injured in the fall in Mentone, in Melbourne’s southeast. The boy had been graffitiing the rear sections of buildings in Como Parade at the time, police said. He was walking across a section of fibre glass roofing when he fell through it, about six metres to the ground. Police spokesman Senior Constable Wayne Wilson said another boy, 13, called an ambulance, and the injured teenager was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Police are yet to speak to the boy and have not charged him.

Jail terms, fines aimed at graffiti vandals

(Taken from www.theage.com.au - 17/4/08)
Melbourne: Graffiti vandals will face up to two years’ jail and thousands of dollars in fines under new Victorian laws. The regulations come into force today, also giving more powers to police to catch offenders. Police Minister Bob Cameron said graffiti vandals charged under the tough new laws could be imprisoned for up to two years and face a fine of more than $26,000. The laws will enable police to issue on-the-spot fines of $550 to anyone carrying spray paint cans if they cannot prove the paint is for work-related purposes. The laws also grant police the power to search individuals over the age of 14 suspected of carrying any graffiti-related implement. Mr Cameron said he hoped the new laws would act as a deterrent, sending a strong message to graffiti vandals. “If people want to be graffitists, they’ll think twice”, he said. The laws form part of the Brumby Government’s anti-graffiti plan, which aims to tackle problem graffiti across Victoria. Victoria Police Superintendent Kevin Sheridan, who was present at this morning’s announcement, welcomed the new laws and said they would help police tackle the problem of graffiti. Superintendent Sheridan said police did not make a distinction between artistic graffiti and other forms of graffiti, such as tagging, saying it all constituted vandalism and was therefore illegal. In addition to the new laws, the Brumby Government have announced the addition of six new graffiti clean-up trailers to the graffiti clean-up partnership with Corrections Victoria. A member of Corrections Victoria’s crew said the process of removing graffiti was both time consuming and labour intensive. “Yellow paint and particular types of black paint are the hardest to get rid of, and can take up to several days to remove,” he said. While the new strategy has been praised by police, street artists have reacted angrily. Andrew McDonald, founder of Melbourne’s Citylights project, a public art project dedicated to displaying street art, is dubious about the new laws. He said they would do little to address the root of the problem. “I don’t think the Government will get the response they want from these changes,” he said. “Graffiti is already illegal. Making it more illegal will not change a thing,” he said. According to Mr McDonald, the new laws are likely to increase - instead of reduce - the rate of graffiti. “When you make the penalties heavier, you’ll get graffiti artists who get the work done faster,” he said. Mr McDonald said the Government needed to view graffiti as a symptom of a broader social issue. “Today’s youth have very little on offer in the way of recreational facilities,” he said. “More money needs to be invested into addressing vandalism as a symptom of a much deeper problem,” he said. The campaign will involve radio advertisements and large public outdoor advertisements.

Illegal Fame #5 has now arrived!

You can pre-order your copy now in our online store, or you can get it at one of the stockists listed in the stockists section from Thursday 10th January onwards.
Merry Xmas!
What a busy year it has been for the magazine, Im personally looking forward to stuffing myself stupid and downing some bevvies over the festive season and having a bit of a break!
If you intend to do the same, make sure you have a dope holiday and please be safe.
Firstly, Id like to let everyone know that we now have some merchandise available - it includes black and white t-shirts, beer holders (perfect for those beers in summer), mesh black singlets and caps. In comparison to most clothing on the market, you can pick up a piece of merch pretty cheap. So please show your support and perhaps consider something as a belated Christmas present for a loved one!
You can place your order in the online store here, or of course at your favourite Illegal Fame retailer.
Secondly, please keep the images coming in, especially steel (we have had a few people mention that there isnt enough steel in the mag, and we can only print what is sent to us.. So if you want see more, please send in your metal monster burners!!

It always helps when you label your images with state and artist name.
Please send them to pics@illegalfame.com.
This issue we have the pleasure of covering the first ever Write 4 Gold Graffiti Championships in Melbourne - inside the mag you will get the full coverage, winners, actions shots and writeup.
To add to that, we also have the Molotow Masters Walls #2 and #3, AFP and TFH productions can be found on page 8.
In terms of paint and the market, a new brand named Aeroskillz have made their way onto the market, as well as Viscious Colours, both onto the lower end of the market. We havent had the chance to try these out as yet, but we will keep you up to date as soon as we get some more info.
Montana have dropped the price of their Goldline range which must be music to peoples ears, so make sure you grab them next time you are paint shopping.
Ironlak are brewing up something by the name of Killa Kombo, at the moment we dont have much more on this, but you can check out a teaser on their site www.ironlak.com.
Molotow / Voltures have been extremely busy with their Masters of Art Series and looking after the Write 4 Gold this year. Hats off to the crew from Voltures for putting on such a successful and positive event for Australian Graff!

Once again, big thanks goes out to the paint brands Montana, Molotow, Sabotaz and Ironlak for their continued support of Illegal Fame, because without them this mag would not be possible... Also special mention to Clinic 116 (SA), Painters World (SA), Scribe Clothing (VIC) & Voltures (WA) for coming on board again this issue, and to all the writers who have been sending flicks.

Peace..
